Bite Alarm Brands: Who Makes What

Twelve brands make most of the bite alarms sold in the UK. Here is what each is known for and which of their alarms we cover.

In short

  • Delkim, Wolf and Steve Neville make their alarms in the UK; most other brands design in the UK and manufacture elsewhere.
  • Delkim is synonymous with vibration sensing; almost every other brand uses roller wheels.
  • Fox, Nash and Trakker cover the mid-range and flagship market; Sonik, Prologic, Korum and JRC lead on value.
  • Gardner now makes and distributes ATT alarms, including the speakerless ATTs.

Delkim

Delkim is the name most anglers associate with vibration sensing. Its alarms use a piezo sensor with no moving parts in the sensing path, plus Delkim's patented signal processing, and they are made in Great Britain. The range runs from the non-radio Ev-D to the flagship Txi-D v2 with its Rx-D v2 receiver, which pairs up to 12 heads. Delkim also makes illuminated hangers and the Safe-D and D-Lok mounting systems.

Fox International

Fox's Micron alarms are among the most familiar on UK banks. The Mini Micron X modernises the classic Mini Micron with receiver technology, and the Micron MX adds a six-colour LED you can change on the head. Fox's D-Tec roller sensing is used across the range.

Nash Tackle

Nash's Siren alarms range from the compact S5 and its wireless S5R version to the flagship Siren R4. The R4 builds on the speed-responsive R3 and adds wave sensing, a USB-C rechargeable receiver rated over 750 m, and a Homecoming Mode for boat anglers. Nash extends the warranty on registered Siren alarms.

Wolf

Wolf designs and manufactures its Icon alarms in Britain. The Icon Qi combines vibration and roller wheel detection; the compact Icon X1 has a built-in rechargeable battery charged by USB-C. Both link to Wolf's HUBB receivers, which have LCD menus. Wolf offers long warranties, extended when you register.

Steve Neville

Steve Neville alarms have been around for more than three decades with very few changes: a four-magnet roller wheel, a simple volume switch and a tough, compact body, designed and made in the UK. The Remote Bite Alarm adds a built-in transmitter with a quoted range of up to 500 m to the Neville receiver box.

Sonik Sports

Sonik focuses on value and features. Its Herox set includes alarms with eight sensitivity levels, a four-channel receiver and a bivvy lamp that switches on when an alarm sounds, all on AAA batteries. Sonik also sells the SKS and Gizmo ranges.

Prologic

Prologic builds rugged alarms for anglers who fish hard. The BAT+ set is waterproof, has a deep rod recess and a 100 m receiver, and Prologic says its electronics were tested for over a year across Europe. Prologic also makes the C-Series, SMX and R2L ranges.

Gardner and ATT (Advanced Technology Tackle)

ATT alarms were distributed by Gardner for many years before Gardner took the company on. The range includes the speakerless ATTs, the ATTa with a switchable speaker, and the ATTx V2 receiver, which can also take a signal from most other brands' alarms via a plug-in transmitter. Gardner also makes the TLB Plus alarm.

Korum

Korum is best known for specialist coarse tackle. Its compact KBI alarm has a cult following, and the KRI remote set adds a 100 m wireless receiver at a very low price.

Wychwood

Wychwood's alarms include the Signature, AVX, Epic and Solace ranges. The Solace offers six LED colours and remembers your settings; its SAS sibling has no speaker on the head, like the ATTs.

JRC

JRC's Radar alarms run from the budget Radar CR and DR sets to the CX, which JRC says was designed, engineered and tested in the UK, and the XTX with directional LEDs.

Trakker

Trakker spent five years developing the DB7-R in-house. It uses an eight-magnet roller, indexed wheels for every setting, and Intelli-Sense Mode to ignore waves and wind, with a receiver that handles up to 16 alarms.

How to choose between brands

Brand loyalty runs deep in carp fishing, but the sensible way to choose is by what you need. Decide on the sensing method first: if you want vibration sensing, that points to Delkim or Wolf's dual-sensing Qi. Then decide on budget and receiver. If you already own illuminated indicators or a receiver from one maker, staying with that brand avoids compatibility headaches. Finally, check warranty terms: UK-made brands such as Delkim, Wolf and Steve Neville are well placed to offer repairs.
